Welcome to Learning About Glass-Filled PTFE Rod

The glass-filled PTFE rod is a high-performance plastic composite material made from PTFE and contains 4% to 25% glass fibres. Glass fibre is the most common filler for PTFE, increasing the wear and creep resistance of the material. This material has improved dimensional stability with a lower coefficient of linear thermal expansion and higher deformation under load

The most commonly used percentages of glass fibres in PTFE are 4%, 8%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 25%. Other fillers are often bronze, carbon, Ekonol, polyimide and PEEK.

Advantages

The FDA-approved grade of glass-filled PTFE rod is available. It has reduced deformation under load, lower thermal expansion, excellent compressive strength and excellent wear properties. It has exceptional temperature resistance, which means it performs impressively in oxidising environments, but it also has some weaknesses.

Weakness

Despite its many advantages and benefits, it also has weaknesses.

  • Abrasive filler unsuitable for some applications
  • Resistance to gas permeation is reduced

Application

As the glass-filled PTFE rod provides high stiffness, wear resistance, and dimensional stability, it is suitable for medical devices like mandrels. Other applications are piston rings, gaskets, valve seats, shaft seals, seals, electrical components and chemical components.
