The Viton FKM rubber gaskets are sealing rings made of fluoroelastomer, also known as fluorocarbon rubber. Depending on the compound, the gaskets can even withstand temperatures from –40 °C to +250 °C. Viton® is essentially the brand name given to the material by Chemours. FKM and FPM are, in principle, exactly the same material, but these are simply other generic designations for it.

The unique feature of this material is its chemical composition. Due to the high fluorine content in the polymer, Viton® is much more resistant to heat, oil, fuel, and many solvents than standard rubber types.

Advantages

One significant advantage of Viton FKM rubber gaskets is their low compression set. This means they retain their shape and sealing effectiveness for an extended period of time, even when subjected to high pressures or harsh fluids. However, the material is less appropriate for ketones (such as acetone) and other strong acids or bases. Another one of their strongest qualities is temperature tolerance. They can operate reliably between approximately –20 °C and +200 °C. However, some compounds can withstand temperatures up to +250°C.

Applications

The Viton FKM rubber gaskets are used in situations where standard rubbers cannot perform. Because of their heat and chemical resistance, they play an important role in the automobile industry. They can be found in fuel systems, engines, and transmissions where lubricants, gasoline, or diesel have an extended exposure time. Viton FKM rubber gaskets are also commonly used in aerospace applications, where their ability to endure high temperatures makes them ideal.
